Before you dive, the dive center may ask you to sign a waiver, such as a liability release. You can do it online in a few minutes, on a phone, tablet or computer.
The signing email
The subject is "Please sign your waiver - " followed by the waiver's name, and the line after the greeting names the dive center that asked for it. Press Sign waiver, or copy the link shown after "Or copy this link into your browser:".
The link works for 48 hours after the email was sent, and only until you have signed. If it has expired, ask the dive center for a new one.
Signing, step by step
- Read the document. The page shows the waiver's name, its organisation and version, and the document itself. Scroll through the document to the very end: the signing part stays greyed out until you reach the bottom. If the document cannot be displayed, press Open the PDF in a new tab, or tick the box confirming you have read it. If the dive center uploaded no document, the page says so and signing is open straight away.
- Answer the medical questions, if this waiver has them. See The medical questionnaire.
- Type your name in Full name.
- Draw your signature in the Signature box with your finger, a stylus or the mouse. Press Clear to start again.
- Tick both boxes, one agreeing to sign electronically and one confirming you have read and understood the waiver. Then press Sign the waiver.
The page then shows Waiver signed and thanks you by name. Your signature is saved to the dive center's records straight away, and the link stops working.
If the sign button stays greyed out
Sign the waiver stays greyed out until all of these are done:
- the document is scrolled to the very end
- every medical question is answered, and none with Yes
- your name is typed in Full name
- both boxes are ticked
Draw your signature as well: pressing the button with an empty box shows "Please draw your signature". A page left open for a long time can show "This signing link has expired" when you press it, because the 48 hours ran out after the page opened; ask the dive center for a new link. "Something went wrong" usually means your connection dropped, so press the button again.
What is recorded
The dive center keeps a signature record as proof: your typed name, the drawn signature, the time you signed, your IP address and the browser you used, and your medical answers if the waiver had a questionnaire. There is no separate date field to fill in; the time is recorded for you.
Asked to sign more than once?
Each waiver has its own email, link and title, so a dive center that needs a liability release and a medical questionnaire sends you two emails. Sign each one you receive: one does not cover the other. You may also be asked again later:
- A waiver can be valid for a set time, often a year from the day you signed, so the dive center may ask you to sign again before a later trip.
- A new version of a document counts as a different waiver and needs a new signature.
- Two emails for the same waiver mean the dive center sent a new link. The earlier one keeps working until it expires. Sign just one, ideally the newest.
The dive center decides which waivers you need and how long they stay valid. If you are unsure why a request arrived, reply to the email and ask them.
Prefer to sign on paper?
The signature has to be drawn; there is no option to type it. If you cannot draw one, have no suitable device or simply prefer paper, tell the dive center. They can have you sign at the shop and record it themselves.
Already signed on paper? You can ignore the email link. It keeps working until it expires, and signing online as well would give the dive center a second signature record.
Good to know
- No copy comes to you. There is no confirmation email and no download of the signed waiver. Take a screenshot of the success screen if you want a record, and ask the dive center if you need the document.
- The document may be in English even when the page is in your language. The buttons and questions follow the page language; the document is the file the dive center uploaded.
- The page does not show the dive center's name, only their logo and their website, phone and Instagram links if they added them. The email tells you who asked.
- There is no parent or guardian signature. If you are signing for a child, ask the dive center how they handle it.
Note: On a shared tablet or the dive center's Wi-Fi, more than 10 signing attempts from the same internet connection within one hour trigger a message ending in "Too Many Requests", and signing from that connection is then blocked for an hour. Sign on your own phone using mobile data instead.
