Availability and pricing

The numbers behind the rental desk are simple once you know the two rules: capacity per size, and rate times quantity times time.

Availability

For each category and size, capacity is the pooled quantity or the number of in-service serialized items. Committed is the most units that are out at the same time within the window you are looking at, not the sum of every open rental line that touches it: a set out Monday to Tuesday and another out Thursday to Friday take one unit off a week-long request, not two. Available is capacity minus committed. For a serialized category whose rentals pick no specific item, capacity is the in-service items of that size, and committed counts every open rental line of that category and size, whether the line names an item or not: lines that named an item before the setting was switched off keep it and still count.

• A per-trip rental only competes with other per-trip rentals on the same day whose departure windows overlap; anything without a slot counts for the whole day.
• A late return stays committed for today until the gear is back, but not for later dates. A late per-trip rental does not count for its own departure window only: until it is returned, it blocks that gear for every departure.
• The count can go below zero, because the rental dialog lets you overbook and a stock quantity can be lowered below what is committed. When today's count is below zero, the Equipment page shows the size as short, and the size chip turns amber.

Pricing

• Per trip: the trip rate, once per line, times the quantity.
• Date range: the daily rate times the quantity times the number of days, both ends inclusive.
• A bundle charges its own rate for the group; its components are free inside it. A component included in every fun dive is not on the rental at all.
• The rate is the one of the rental's start date, season price included, and it holds for the whole rental.
• A category with prices per size charges each picked item at the price of its own size and a line without picked items at the price of the line's size, falling back to the category's price in both cases; see The price list.
• A returned line stops on its return day; a bundle stops when its last component is back.

The total is previewed live in the rental dialog and broken down per line on the rental panel. Total override on a rental replaces the computed figure. Rental amounts show only to people who may see prices; for everyone else a rental carries no rates and no total. See Returns, damage and overdue gear.

What does not exist

There is no deposit and no rental slip to print. The rental records what went out and what it should cost, and it charges the guest's bill when it is created; payments are taken on the bill, see Bills. A discount on a rental is a line discount on the bill, see Discounts.
